Matthew 9:1–8 The Authority to Forgive Sins
In Matthew 9:1–8, Jesus does something far greater than healing a paralyzed man. He forgives his sins.
The religious leaders immediately recognize the significance of Jesus' words. Anyone can claim to heal a body, but only God has the authority to forgive sin. By both forgiving the man and then healing him, Jesus publicly demonstrates that He possesses divine authority.
This passage confronts us with humanity's greatest problem. Our deepest need is not physical healing, financial success, comfort, or self-improvement. Our greatest need is forgiveness before a holy God.
In this message, we'll examine:
• Why forgiveness is humanity's greatest need
• The connection between sin and suffering in a fallen world
• The response of the religious leaders to Jesus' authority
• The evidence Jesus provides for His claims
• What this passage teaches us about salvation and grace today
The authority of Jesus extends far beyond physical circumstances. He has the authority to deal with the root problem of the human condition: sin itself.
